I’d love to speak at your church, retreat center, or women’s event! My background in the art and history of the Middle Ages allows me to bring a unique perspective and a greater depth to modern spirituality.

Lisa Deam speaking

Retreats and Workshops

Mapping Your World—Participants take a walk of faith through medieval maps and their beautiful, Christ-centered world. Part 1 includes an illustrated tour of maps and an exploration of their biblical principles. In Part 2, Lisa guides participants in making maps of their spiritual lives to see Christ at work in their journey of faith.

Our Scars, His Grace—Henri Nouwen said, “We all are wounded people, whether physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually.” This event is a journey of redemption that encourages us to see God’s grace in our wounds. Lisa leads participants in an exploration of scripture, works of art, and Christian history as they learn to let God transform their personal stories.

Spiritual Gifts from the Middle Ages—Medieval artists and mystics give us a gift in their creative works that express the soul's yearning for God. Come learn how their spirituality can enrich our walk today. This event includes exercises that allow participants to reflect on how medieval spirituality can meet their own.

These retreat and workshop topics can be tailored in length and format to your event. Please contact me for details.

Multi-Media Talks

Medieval World Maps

In this keynote talk, Lisa introduces world maps of the Middle Ages and explores their rich Christian imagery. She suggests that these “old-fashioned” maps are relevant to us today – they picture a Christian worldview and inspire us to lead a Christ-centered life.

Tattooed for Jesus!

These days, we see tattoos everywhere—even in church. What do they mean? What does the Bible say about them? Lisa reveals the history of body markings in the Bible, popular culture, and ancient and contemporary Christian practice. You might be surprised to learn what your tattoo means!

Giving Birth—the Biblical Way

Did you know that in the New Testament, childbirth is a potent metaphor for salvation and spiritual growth? In this talk, Lisa examines the often-overlooked imagery of birth in the Bible and in medieval Christian writings. She reveals the surprising truth of what “giving birth” means for every follower of Christ.

Monsters and Miracles

The Middle Ages is staging a comeback in popular culture and contemporary spirituality. No wonder: the medieval era is rich in imagination, faith, and artistic expression. In this talk, Lisa explores some of the most meaningful spiritual traditions and practices of the Middle Ages to see how they can renew our faith.

Lisa did a wonderful job of weaving together scripture, art history, and personal insights. Her style of speaking is very warm and helped set the tone for our retreat. I appreciate the way Lisa challenged and encouraged our women in her handling of the topic. –

Allison Baker

Thank you so very much for teaching us and sharing with us your experiences and your deep reflections on what truly makes us good and perfect. I know that your presentation helped some in our community reach a more profound understanding of their pain and their self-worth in light of Christ's promises to us--well done, faithful preacher!

Joshua Messner

This was a really unique workshop. It gave me a new perspective on how medieval maps can shape the window through which we see our lives today, especially our relationship with God.

Calandra Hackler

As a pastor, I need to be nourished, too. Your workshop was a gift to me. It reoriented my world and gave me a new way to look at my life.
